THE PRACTICE. THE PERSPECTIVE.
About the collective.
Hwamanda Dance Troupe is a Harare-based Zimbabwean performance company founded in 1998. Its repertoire brought traditional dances, songs and instrumentation together, presenting the variety of Zimbabwean performance traditions through an ensemble format.
The company’s programme Around Zimbabwe in Dances and Songs reflected a commitment to preserving, developing and sharing cultural heritage. Alongside stage appearances, its work included training and outreach in schools, colleges and communities.
By 2019, the troupe had represented Zimbabwe at events in Africa, Asia and Europe. Its international experience included performances in several Chinese cities, Global Beat events in Denmark, the Seychelles Carnival, and invitations to festivals in India. The group was described at that time as an ensemble of fifteen performers, bringing dance, music and collective energy to the stage.
