THE PRACTICE. THE PERSPECTIVE.
About the artist.
Obert Chari is a Zimbabwean musician from Bikita, known for the song Mebo and his work fronting ZCC Hakireni Stars. His early singing developed through choirs at ZCC Mbungo before he began recording his own projects.
He released Ngoma Yababa in 2012, followed by Vaporofita Venhema in 2015 and Mariyambutsa in 2017. Wider attention followed Wanganella in 2018 and the widely shared video for Mebo. By 2019, he had received an eighteenth-edition NAMA nomination.
Chari’s music brought together his experience of church singing, recording and band performance. The Hakireni Stars lineup described in 2019 included singers and dancers alongside bass, rhythm and lead guitars and drums, with several of his siblings contributing to the group.
