THE PRACTICE. THE PERSPECTIVE.

About the artist.

Sandra Nankoma is a Ugandan singer, songwriter, composer and performer whose music draws on jazz and soul. Her stage journey included a 2013 debut at Bayimba Festival and appearances alongside musicians from Uganda and beyond. A 2017 Visa Pour la Création residency took her to Paris, where she developed her debut solo album Ye’nze, collaborated with French artists and performed at cultural events. Her song Kaddugala received recognition at the 2018 All Africa Music Awards, winning the inspirational music category for a female artist. The song encouraged dark-skinned girls to value their skin and resist bleaching. By 2019, Nankoma’s music had become closely associated with social concerns, particularly the experiences of women and girls, while her album also addressed discrimination and xenophobia.
